Getting tired of the same themes - women getting violently raped and killed. I know it’s realistic and actually happens but  non-female victims also exist

I was lucky enough to get an ARC from ~NetGalley and then doubled my luck by winning a paperback ARC from the Publisher via a newsletter competition!

I hadn't read a Will Trent book before but have read other books by the authors.  Then I watched and loved the TV series. Whilst book Will and TV Will do not look alike I still got the same vibe from them (although I must admit I think TV Will is now "my Will" in my head!!!)

Will and Sara are settling into their new engagement but trauma from Sara's past has come back to haunt her via an old case now at trial.  Sara recognises the parallels between Dani's case and her own rape.  Her rapist had gone to jail so why are there so many links between the cases.

Faith is also struggling with motherhood second time around and her fling with an FBI agent isn't the well-kept secret they thought it was!

The storyline is well crafted and the trauma Sara overcame is dealt with realistically and with care.  Whilst the SA scenes are never gratuitous, there may be readers for whom this may be too much to read.  I felt Sara was empathetic and strong and Will was her perfect foil.  Faith is the mistress of multi-tasking and she has done such a good job of raising her son, essentially only with her tribe of LEO family for support.  Yet she still seems so rocked to the core when her son makes a decision on his future.

Strong, powerful, skincrawling, suspenseful.  There were times I cried for the women traumatised, when I wanted to reach into the book and throttle some characters and the utter revulsion for all things "mixer".  I'll eventually get around to reading all the Will Trent books and I know I'm pretty much going to love them all if they are all this good!

This is the first of Karin Slaughter’s book that I’ve come across. To be honest I read the title as Slaughter After That Night due to the format of the front cover.

This book captured my attention from the start as I thought it was thriller, then it developed into a criminal investigation plot. I would say it is a mix of both. The other bit that pulled me is the medical background of the book. I guess like moth to fire I have to read it.

As it is my first time reading her book, I didn’t realise she was American, all the medical terms are American based and lack of an extra alphabet that is present in British English. If not for the medical terms, I probably wouldn’t realise it, as it isn’t as obvious in the later part of the book (or I may have got used to it). I’m sure this is the same with British writing read by American.

There are loads of repetition which is good for me as I now realised that this is the 10th book of Detective Will Trent, it gave me a background to the characters. This could be a little pain for readers who have read her books from the start though.

I love the nod of thanks to Healthcare professional and that we are better than google!

I try not to read the blurb these days to avoid the feeling of deja vu. But perhaps for this book I should have. It is quite harsh to read, it reminds me of the real world issues and internet safety and all.

So content warnings: rape, sexual assault and domestic abuse.

Thanks Karin Slaughter and HarperCollins for the advance review copy of the book via ReadersFirst and NetGalley in exchange of honest feedback.

Another late night staying up to finish a Karin Slaughter novel. Will Trent and Sara Linton are back at it, with this case landing a little too close to home. It opens with Sara testifying in a rape/murder case against a college boy whose family she knows from her own university days. After a shocking revelation, Sara must revisit the ghosts (and demons) of her past and what led to her becoming a medical examiner rather than the surgeon she had dreamed of being. They are thrust into a world of wealth and privilege and depravity - where money solves all problems and makes people disappear.

Another page turner by Slaughter - can’t wait to meet her in person in Tulsa and have her sign a copy for my library!

TW: rape, assault
