This book was absolutely amazing. While mostly a light romance, it's heavier than almost any other romance I've read, and it felt so so human. It so reflected the pain that life has to offer while also clinging to the hope that pulls us through. I loved it. 10 stars.

Really enjoyed this book until about 80% in. Felt it was unnecessary conflict in what I was hoping to be an easy read. Suppose it all gets resolved in book 2?

Kristen is in a 2 year relationship with Tyler, a linguist in the marines who speaks 9+ languages. Her mom loves him, her dog hates him.

Josh is fresh out of a long relationship and has just moved to LA to work as a fireman alongside his best friend, Brandon. He could use some extra money though as he’s left everything to his ex girlfriend, so he offers to help Kristen build stairs for her small dog business.

Serious sexual tension between Kristen and Josh arises (inevitably) but Kristen squarely puts Josh in the friend zone and stays loyal to Tyler.

I liked the premise of the book but by the end it felt really repetitive like "we get it already". I don't mind the miscommunication trope when done well but this got way too frustrating for me.

I loved the banter and there were a lot of funny moments but it got to the point where Kristen was too "not like other girls" and it soured the character for me.

I wish more of the conflict had to do with Kristen and her mother or her boyfriend/ex.
The lunch where Josh stands up to Kristen's mom was my favourite part because it showed how much he knew and loved her. I feel like there isn't an opportunity for Kristen to show the same for Josh.

I really liked the way infertility was talked about in this book but
then felt betrayed by her getting pregnant in the end. They had this great moment where Josh listed all the ways he would be fine with them having their family and Kristen could have the hysterectomy and everything would be fine and then her being pregnant felt like a really cheap plot twist right at the end.

Also, I know
killing off Brandon was probably to set up Sloan's story next, but I really hated it.
I just think this story would have been stronger if it had gone a different way.

The fact that this book was inspired by the author's best friend makes me sad because I really did not enjoy it. The main characters were totally unlikeable: the female lead gave off "pick me girl" vibes, and the male lead was incredibly judgmental and condescending. I'm not sure if another Abby Jimenez book is worth trying after this one—definitely a no from me.
