The Codex by Douglas Preston

This book was part of my action adventure book obsession and I completely loved it, although it is very much a guilty pleasure. It had an unrealistic storyline, something that you would only see in a Hollywood blockbuster but that was part of the reason that I loved it. I wanted something that was exciting, out of this world and wasn't depressing or serious, and this ticked all the boxes.

Book is okay. Not too great but definitely a page turner.

This summer I would have gladly skipped seeing the new Indiana Jones movie to stay home and reread this incredible adventure.

Jungle temples full of treasure, fathers and sons, a small monkey, Mayan medicine... it all adds up to extreme adventure escapism.

(Kind of contains spoilers) I really liked both "Relic" and "Reliquary", which were by the same author (plus a coauthor). I don't know if it was the lack of the coauthor or what, but this wasn't anywhere near as exciting or interesting. I could predict a lot of what happened, and much of it seemed trite. I mean, everyone even learned a valuable lesson at the end. On the other hand, there was at least one bit of the ending that was unexpected, which makes me happy. It certainly wasn't unreadable, but not something I'd go out of my way to pick up.

Preston isn't exactly a master of the English language. The book is fairly fast-paced and makes for a quick, easy read. But the majority of the plot points towards the end are ludicrous, and it devolves into a sappy family reunion. Worth reading if you happen to have it, but I wouldn't suggest going out and looking for it.

The new Preston/Child novel doesn't come out for a month or two, so I decided to start reading their solo novels in the meantime.

There are some fun "in-jokes" in THE CODEX that tie it squarely into the world of the co-written novels, but this is a much more straightforward action thriller than the Pendergast novels. The setup is simple: A rich billionaire knows he is dying, so he buries his inheritance in a far-flung location, leaving his sons to find and retrieve it. There are some twists, of course, and the whole thing is a nice, brainless "popcorn" adventure novel. If you're looking for a novel that will provide hours of intense literary analysis, this isn't the book, but if you want a quick, escapist novel, you could do a lot worse than this one!
