The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

5.0

This book was phenomenal in more ways than one. I knew a little bit about Henrietta Lacks, but I was definitely not aware of the extent to which her family was affected by the use of her sells in modern day biology. It broke my heart to see how her family, deeply rooted in religious beliefs, was broken because they felt as though Henrietta's soul resided in those cells. I have my own personal opinions about the entire concept of doctors taking medical waste for their own advantages. Nevertheless, what I can say about this issue is that it is stories such as the Tuskegee Experiment and the use of Henrietta's cells that have ultimately made the black community hesitant about wanting to go to doctors. I plan to do more research on this topic and it may be a project that I throw myself into. Hopefully I can find more text that really delves into the black community's experience with the medical field. This really opened my eyes to a lot of issues related to the medical field/industry and I can't wait to read more.
