Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?: And Other Questions You Should Have Answers to When You Work in the White House by Alyssa Mastromonaco, Lauren Oyler
3.0
I decided to read this book as a sort of 'antidote' to the passages of 'Fire & Fury' and other pieces about the chaotic Trump White House, seeking insights to a time when politics seemed to work on a more 'normal' basis. Mastromonaco's book served well at that, with it being a quick and mostly light read about her time in the Obama White House. It was not overly about the politics and more about her experiences-- particularly as a young woman in a world where woman are still far from equally represented (noted particularly by the passages about how she had to get a tampon dispenser put into the women's bathroom of the White House, an idea which had never ever been previously considered).
Mastromonaco outwardly professes that this is a book for the young female reader who might want to get into politics to give advice and a peek behind the curtain, but I would say as someone who doesn't fit that bill I still took some good points away-- particularly in her repeated lessons about leadership and how to get ahead when the going gets tough in your career.
