The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams
4.0
I'm definitely enjoying my late foray into the Hitchhiker's series. Much like the first in this series, I found Restaurant at the End of the Universe to be thoroughly entertaining, filled with the type of humor I wish I had more of in my life, and some passages that remain surprisingly poignant decades later. Many characters and interactions remain as relevant as ever today when considering the state of politics (who should lead us? what does it say about a person if they are the one who wants to lead us), culture and anti-intellectualism, and the dumbing down of people in general. Makes you wish Adams was alive today to make sense of it all.
The only reason I drop it down from five stars to four is that I'm starting to get the sense that Adams has plenty he wants to say, but doesn't feel compelled to shoehorn that into a cohesive plot and story structure. Certain chapters left me wondering where exactly was the narrative and what was I waiting to find out in the story, only to realize that's not the point and I should just continue to enjoy the ride.
