I always know a story has done its job when it makes me cry (which to be fair is quite easy). I think what really gets to me the most is that no matter how much suffering the protagonist may experience or how emotional I may get while reading, both this novel and the previous end on a hopeful note. The author always chooses to finish it in a place that doesn’t leave you feeling bereft or upset when putting down the novel. You know how her life will continue to play out but for now there is hope. It also helps that I just adore the style of prose that this author employs. Some of the imagery is just gorgeous.
