Using Fejo by Victoria Aveline
4.0
4 Stars
Another consistently satisfying entry in this alien MF series! I think Fejo has edged out a slight win over Auzed as my favorite!
Pretty much since book 2, Vanessa (one of the captured humans) has been desperate to return to earth, and we finally learn why. It’s a very compelling and understandable reason, and it’s no wonder that she will pretty much do anything to get back home, and if that means signing a marriage contract with a morally gray space pirate, then so be it.
On the outside, Fejo may seem like a superficial, devil may care, mercenary but deep down this guy has been through some terribly awful things. Like anyone, he just wants someone to love him and care for him genuinely, as he’s been used and abused his entire life. When a beautiful human agrees to be his first marriage contract ever, Fejo is ecstatic that someone appreciates what he could potentially provide for a wife, and he’s more than willing and able to do all that’s necessary to please.
Admittedly, I hate secrets, and the secret here is present for about half the book. There's also a lot of guilt on Vanessa’s side, and the lady denies her emotions and refuses to use her words, instead lashing out often with anger and defensiveness. So you can see why Vanessa wasn’t even close to being a top female MC in this series despite her rational motivations.
Fejo’s feelings however, like all the other Clecanian males, really appealed to my cold heart, and all I wanted to do was give him the cuddles he so deserved. He was like rubber - every bad thing that came his way, he just let it bounce off of him, doing his duty and doing what was right despite painful yearnings. The man’s a sexy charmer with a very nice, capable lethality to him. Do not be fooled by his easy smile.
Of course, this remains consistently sexy with good feels, bringing another perspective that's different than the other coupledom conflicts that have already been presented. I loved that this was set in outer space, loved the multitude of new aliens and their cultures that were introduced, and enjoyed the extra conflict involving a villainess and her henchmen causing all sorts of trouble.
Aveline continues to grow her Clecanian universe, and I continue to enjoy it!
