Inspired by West African mythology, this story follows Simidele, a human-turned mermaid, whose purpose is to bless the souls of those who die at sea and send them on their way to the afterlife. But one day, Simidele angers the Supreme Creator by interfering and rescuing a teenage boy who was thrown into the water. Now, to save the other mermaids - or Mami Wata - she must journey to make amends with the god and avoid danger on the way.

I was very excited to pick up this book, but I have to say that I’m disappointed with it. I found the middle to be quite slow and considered giving up. I also did not feel the connection between the two main characters so when dramatic events happened, the stakes and emotional impact were lost on me. I absolutely loved the mythology in the book so it is a shame that the rest of it fell flat.
