I wanted to read a mystery for fall, and this book by a Canadian crime writer was at the top of my list!
This is the first book in the series where we are introduced to Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec. Inspector Gamache and his team arrive in a tiny village called Three Pines to investigate the tragic death of Jane Neal, a longtime resident. The locals are sure a terrible hunting accident has taken place in the woods where Jane is found, but Gamache isn’t convinced.
I really enjoyed this book! I’d say it falls squarely within the cozy mystery or cozy crime genre, so if you’re looking for a thriller, this is not it. Inspector Gamache is extremely likable and respected among his colleagues. He gets to know the residents of Three Pines and earns their trust as he works to solve the mystery of Jane’s death, while also trying to mentor a new detective who is too insecure to take advantage of the learning opportunity. I’m always looking to read more Canadian authors and I’ll definitely be picking up the next Inspector Gamache mystery.
