The Boy At the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Raúf
5.0
This book literally broke me. I cried so many times it is ridiculous but it is such a great read! It is a YA and is tailored for younger audiences in the language used but reading it as an adult is equally heartwarming and heartbreaking, such an emotional roller coaster. The story follows a group of friends at a primary school who want to befriend the new boy who they later come to discover is a refugee child. They try everything to become friends with him despite the language barrier, hearing so much playground gossip from parents about how he is 'bad' because he's a refugee and that 'they should all be kicked back to where they came from' and being targeted by the school bully. Yet as they pursued and became friends they learnt what refugees were, about Ahmet's family, the horrifying conditions he endured to get here and why he came. It truly does tug on all of your heart strings for many different reasons and without giving away any spoilers it does have a somewhat happy ending and with everything happening in the news right now regarding refugees I think this book is a really important read. I highly recommend it but if you're an emotional wreck like me then make sure you have plenty of tissues
