Redskins: Insult and Brand by C. Richard King

4.0

I read this book on a whim, and happened to finish it on the day that the newest Washington Post study on opinions of the Native American community about the name of the Washington football team came out by coincidence. While the results of that study, which showed an unprecedented amount of Native Americans express lack of being offended or even caring-- and addressed some of the flaws in the study previously cited by Dan Snyder about why the team name is not offensive. However, I think the book did a great job going into the history of the name, elucidating why it always has been a faux pas at best and a terribly offensive slur at worst, and gave me the tools to look at the new study with a good background. I think the big takeaway was that just having the permission of the oppressed doesn't make the oppression defensible. I'll continue to avoid using the term personally, and this book certainly made that an easier decision.
