Choosing Theo by Victoria Aveline
3.0
3.5 Stars!
To say the least I was entertained by this first entry into this alien/human MF mates series.
We’re introduced to the Clecanian species who have unfortunately hit a roadblock in their reproductive abilities, and their race seems to be slowly dying as fertility has lessened and the ratio of females born is 1 in 5. To make things worse, the ability to find one’s true mate has disappeared for the last several generations. Here, males vie for the chance to be a husband to females for 3 months at a time hoping to produce a child and perhaps win a female permanently.
Obviously, the situation is dire, and it seems that there are some rogue scientists who have taken things too far. Jade is that consequence - kidnapped from earth, having escaped her captors, only to find that she can’t return home and is forced to stay on an alien planet. She might as well choose a husband right? Good thing these “aliens” share a common ancestor so their otherness is mostly cultural.
This brings nothing new to the table but again, I quite enjoyed myself. Theo is the classic “scarred” hero who doesn’t think he’ll ever have the chance at a wife and is convinced the only reason Jade chose him is because she’s a spy for his enemies. Wonder of wonders when it turns out she has invoked his mate marks to appear, and Theo is just going to enjoy the ride for what it is. Jade in turn, is fiesty and all in to make the most of her situation. She’s not wrong right? Ha!
Sexy and nostalgic, I’m going to check the next book out!
