This book was the YA in May pick for the Modern Mrs. Darcy Book Club. I was excited to read it because it is a Little Women remix and I’ve never actually read Little Women! But I did watch the 2019 film before reading this book.

I won’t give a long synopsis of this book because, as I said, it is a Little Women remix. Similar to the classic, this story takes place in North Carolina during the Civil War, but in this remix, the March sisters are young Black women living in the Freedmen's Colony of Roanoke Island.

I have to say that I was very disappointed in this book. I found it quite boring and just couldn’t connect with the characters. As a Canadian, the biggest takeaway was what I learned about the emancipation of Black families during the American Civil War and the colonies that they gathered to build. I learned so much from the historical aspect of it but I’m afraid this one was just not for me.
