This was the pick for Mystery March in my in-person book club.

Vera Wong lives above the tea shop she owns in San Francisco’s Chinatown, and one day she comes downstairs to find a dead man on the floor of her shop! After taking a piece of evidence from the man’s hand, she calls the police. Soon, Vera becomes very skeptical of the cops’ ability to solve this murder. So like any suspicious empty-nester Chinese mother, Vera decides she will solve this murder herself! But things become a bit muddled when Vera starts to care about each person on her list of suspects. Who is the murderer? Will she have to give a new friend up to the police?

Unfortunately, this book just didn’t do it for me. I found it hard to believe that the people on Vera’s suspect list would put up with her overbearing nature and actions. I’m also not sure that the multiple POVs, which included all of Vera’s suspects, worked well here. I enjoyed it enough and was curious enough about who the murderer was to finish it, but overall it wasn’t very memorable.
