I got this book as a Christmas gift and had heard such good things about it so I was really excited to read it even though I don’t read many graphic novels. This is a hard copy of Volume 1 of the creator’s very popular WEBTOON about the gods of Olympus that focuses on Hades and Persephone.

I will say that I had never read the WEBTOON before starting this book and I had a few issues with the book. First, the illustrations were not exactly clear and easy to see. Some were on the small side and the ones featuring Hades with various shades of blue were sometimes so dark that I wasn’t sure what I was looking at. Second, I felt the flow was a bit off. The transitions from the main story about Hades and Persephone to stories featuring the other gods felt choppy and awkward. Lastly, it feels like the creator assumes you already know a lot about how the gods of Olympus are related to or connected to each other. This definitely caused moments of confusion for me as I only know a bit about their relationships.

Having said all of that, I read some comments by reviewers who mentioned that they felt like this series works much better on WEBTOON. So, I got curious and checked it out! I picked up from where Volume 1 ends and I am still reading it! I definitely agree with those reviewers; this works way better on WEBTOON. I still feel like the creator assumes you know a lot about the gods going into it, but the other issues I mentioned don’t exist on WEBTOON. It’s really a shame that the book doesn’t do it justice.
