The Prison Doctor by Amanda Brown

5.0

You all know that I absolutely love healthcare professional memoirs because I used to be a nurse and I love getting a inside glimpse at different areas of healthcare and this book did not disappoint! This was a re-read for me because I wanted to re-read it before reading her new book which is my next read. This book is so insightful, eye opening and inspirational. It documents Amanda's drastic career change from a GP in her own practice to a prison doctor and follows her throughout her time practicing within 3 notorious prisons in the UK and the prisoners and experiences she encounters that not only challenge her but allow her to grow and thrive professionally in such an alien environment to her when she could be kicking back and starting to think about her retirement. It really goes to show that you're never too old to try something new. It has a great dark sense of humour that comes with the job as well as some very emotional and heartbreaking moments. Overall, I highly recommend reading this book. For me it is up there with Adam Kay's books just minus the laugh out loud humour. Twigger warning, discusses violence, drug use, rape/sexual assault and abuse, suicide and self harm throughout.
