This is a standalone set after the events in the Fear & Fire duology, which I haven't read yet. Despite that, the characters and their history were easy to follow.

Esta is a morally grey fmc, and she struggles to accept friendship bonds and love. Her (fake) relationship with Aiden definitely has a positive effect on her, and that was cute to see. My favourite parts were when they had conversations getting to know each other better.

This story is a romantasy with fade to black intimate scenes. The story focuses primarily on the relationship development  between Esta and Aiden. There were times in the story where it seemed like the characters forgot about political conflict until the next incident happened. That was the only thing that bothered me a bit, as I prefer my main characters to be a bit more proactive about threats.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and would recommend it if you're looking for a romantasy that touches upon themes like past sexual assault, emotional abuse by a parental figure, and ptsd.
