One in a Millennial: On Friendship, Feelings, Fangirls, and Fitting In by Kate Kennedy

My in-person book club voted to read this book in June.

In One in a Millenial, pop culture commentator and podcast host, Kate Kennedy, draws on her childhood and teenage experiences to write essays that both celebrate and call into question the millennial zeitgeist she grew up in. From the Spice Girls to pumpkin spice lattes, Kate makes the case that surface-level interests can take us deeper than we think.

As a whole, this book was just okay for me. Some of the essays took me on really fun nostalgia trips and for the most part, I agree with the author that many interests that might be labelled as superficial actually carry a deeper meaning. At times though, I found her style of humour writing didn’t provide the smoothest reading experience and I’d get tripped up mid-sentence. I also felt like a lot of the essays were much longer than necessary.
