This was the September pick for the in-person book club I lead.

This psychological thriller follows the story of Alicia Berenson, a famous painter, living a seemingly charmed life in London until one night, she shoots her husband five times and then refuses to speak. Alicia remains silent for years, and Theo Faber, a criminal psychotherapist who has been following Alicia’s story in the media, is determined to help her heal and get her to speak again. But can Theo keep a clear head or is he becoming obsessed?

I enjoyed the prose in this book but ultimately, it fell a bit flat for me. Immediately I felt that neither Theo nor Alicia’s diary entries could be considered reliable narrators which made me distrust both of them right from the start. The twist or reveal didn’t do much for me. I hadn’t predicted it but it also didn’t impress me, and ultimately I felt mostly indifferent about this book.
