A Song of Wraiths and Ruin was the May book pick for the #chronicallyiconicbookclub as it has anxiety and migraine representation.

Inspired by West African folklore, this story is told from both Malik's and Karina’s perspectives. Malik and his sisters are fleeing their war-torn home to start a new life in the rich city of Ziran but an angry spirit targets Malik and interrupts their plans. He kidnaps Malik’s younger sister and will only return her if Malik completes one task: kill Princess Karina. Meanwhile, Princess Karina’s mother has been assassinated and the court is threatening mutiny. She decides to use ancient magic to resurrect her mother but to do that she needs the heart of a king, someone she must marry and then kill. But with ancient evils looming and an attraction building, is there a way for both Malik and Karina to survive?

I really enjoyed this book! The weaving together of fantastical and folklore elements created such a lush world, not to mention the history and world-building. I also like books with dual perspectives and this was no exception. Overall, I thought this was a solid, well-paced, and compelling fantasy read! I’m excited to read the second book in this duology!
