A Method of Prayer for Modern Times by Robin Amis, Raymond Hébert, Jean of Saint-Denys
4.0
A dense but beautiful devotional on the subject of prayer. Saint Jean of Saint-Denis offers a compelling mixture of mid-century French thought (he refers to insights from psychoanalysis, existentialist philosophy, comparative religious studies, and even Marxism) with the Orthodox mindset. He begins with a meditation on unceasing prayer and the Jesus prayer, then moves into an exciting analysis of the Lord's prayer. The last third of the book is entirely devoted to passages from the Early Fathers. I'm still digesting a lot of this book and will certainly return to it, refer to it, and read it as a devotional in the future.
