Dog Days by TA Moore
dark
tense
slow-paced
3.5
Though I’ve not read a lot of Moore, I will say how she brings forth her stories is consistent in the way that they always leave more questions than answers, propelling me forward instead of pushing me away.
Here, wolves have been banished from humanity behind the Wall but old prophecies are coming to fruition, and it’s time for the Wolf to once again, regain its dominance over the world. Caught in the middle of this inevitable hellish transition is banished Wolf Prince Jack and his drive to find Daniel, a past lover who’s half Wolf, half human, who really doesn’t truly belong to either world.
As other reviews have said, this is a violent story with gore and horror and plenty of unlikeable characters. Jack is too alpha. Danny is too human. They inevitably clash, and it was a bit frustrating. It doesn’t help that it’s nebulous regarding the doom and gloom apocalyptic event that is sure to come, nor is it clear how monstrous these wolves can possibly get.
This is definitely not a romance. There’s a magnetic pull, an undeniable connection between Jack and Daniel but absolutely no signs of hearts and flowers at this point. However, what's there is quite some antagonistic rough and tumble smexy. No doubt Danny and Jack are irrevocably pulled together but their different statuses, their different inherent demeanors of dominance and submissiveness understandably clash. For sure, this makes for a contentious, but heady, back and forth of wanting and resisting.
Overall, Moore gives just enough to make me curious as to how the 2nd book will go with Jack’s psycho brother Gregor. Should make for an interesting follow up!
