It feels wrong to give a book that I finished pretty quickly 1 star (plus Verity is my favorite book of 2021) so a sympathy rating feels appropriate. I’m a shameless DNFer if I’m bored, so the fact that I even finished this says something. Not sure what exactly, but….. something?

Tate is so boring. Her every thought is consumed with Miles the second she meets him. Miles gives absolutely NOTHING and she’s just like instantly obsessed with him? Her incessant lack of self respect when it comes to their toxic “deal” is miserable. Her relationship with her brother is FUCKING CRINGY!!!!! Aside from his “no one is good enough for my sister” misogynist bullshit, the whole time I read this I imagined one of my brothers trying to even approach a conversation about my sex life and there’s not a scenario that I wouldn’t tell them to shut the fuck up and stop being weird? Like actual real life sibling brothers that have healthy relationships with their sisters don’t do that? Idk man, just

Found myself in a bit of a reading funk for a couple of weeks and this was fun. Plenty of twists sprinkled throughout, which, to be candid weren’t anything mind shattering but again…. Fun time!

The dialog is quick and the minds’ of these women are so crazy it’s kind of ridiculous. Juuuuuuust on the cusp of being corny enough to be annoying but honestly I never got to that point. The characters are supposed to be insufferable sometimes it’s over kill ya kno?

Anywho, gave me “Gone Girl but Corny” vibes.

I’m not here to yuck anyone’s yum * upon review, I actually am* but how the hell did this get picked for best romance over Love Hypothesis??!!!! I’m bitter.

First things first, the amount of times Aaron’s fucking blue eyes were described made me want to leap into the “deep blue” depths of any “ocean” with 100 pound weights gripped to my ankles.

I get it, it’s SUPPOSED to be corny beyond all belief but dayum

Idk not a fan, smut wasn’t even that good.
Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell

Not sure how to rate NF but this was interesting!

As someone who has always been fascinated by “cults”, has been affiliated with evangelical Christianity in the past, and has a former “boss babe mlm” mom, most of this information wasn’t new to me. And even if you aren’t immersed in those worlds, it probably still won’t be new to you either. If you’ve seen the TV show Waco, a lot of the nuance in this book has probably already been invoked outta you.

BUT!

I loved how Montell brought up the point of not referring to specific sects as “cults” because of the harm just the inference alone can do. And I really related to her last chapter where she talked about how she no longer views people who get entangled with “cults” as people who are dumb or gullible. It can be anyone. We all just want to be seen, and sometimes people take advantage of that.

Overall this was repetitive, a touch snoozy, with some nice snacks to chew on sprinkled throughout.
