I read the original Speak in high school, but I remember not liking it much. Then again, I was in high school. Either way, I think this graphic novel adaptation is a wonderful new take on the story - the entire story is about Melinda not being able to verbally express what happened to her, and Emily Carroll does a wonderful job portraying Melinda's state of mind visually.

Beautiful and concise. Disturbing in a deeply familiar way.

The scariest thing about this book was how reasonable it all seemed from June's perspective. I would be going along with it, and then she'd mention an Asian person in a way that made it clear she really didn't see them as a person, and I'd be like, "Oh no," but the "oh no" was also at me for not realizing the subtler ways she justified her racism.

Honestly it kinda felt like a retreading of the same themes as the first book. I thought the first book's style was Ox's unique voice, but it's basically the same in this book.

I didn't like the main ship and I was more interested in Tiaanet's story
