This was phenomenal. I did a tandem read with the audiobook (thanks to Libro.fms ALC program) and the ebook via Libby. If you like doing poetry collections as audiobooks, PLEASE get the ebook for this too. The art pieces spread throughout this collection really bring it all together.

I really wish I liked this. I really do. I love the other books I’ve read by Joshua Whitehead, but this one isn’t doing it for me, and my brain just doesn’t understand the format of this book :(

I enjoyed the story overall but I think the audiobook copy I had from Libby was missing sentences because some scenes made absolutely no sense? Or the recording was messed up. It’s very clear when a new scene or new chapter was happening, but sometimes in the middle of a chapter it would change abruptly to a new scene and I have no clue what happened. It’s a shame because I was excited for this. Might decide to get the ebook instead and read that to get the full story.

This is a powerful memoir but I felt like the writing itself was incomplete in lots of sections. I felt like there was more that the author wanted to say but didn’t, and to me it shows.
