The characters were full of themselves and unlikeable. Essentially emotional cheating. One specific comment about infertility during the invitation dinner irked me enough to finally stop reading the book. My 1st dnf in 3 years.

I was gifted The Friendzone by Abby Jimenez from a friend. I read it pretty quickly eager to discuss with her. This was an average read for me. I didn’t hate it but I wouldn’t recommend it either. The most irritating part was the lack of communication from the FMC. She basically held on to a secret about not being able to have kids to someone who made it clear having a family was important to them. I felt myself wanting to scream, “Just be honest with him!!”  The MMC comes of as perfect remembering little details like which foods she does and doesn’t like which her own Mother doesn’t know.
This is book one of a series and apart of me is curious how it will go on, so I might continue down the road or maybe I’ll just give up and try a more current book of this author.

I love Abby Jimenez’s books. And I liked this one too.. I just.. I’m not sure. Maybe I need to ruminate for a while. It felt  pretty steady basic romcom- like (miscommunication was driving me crazy and Kristen’s gas lighting was also annoying). But with 100 pages left or so it took some turns… I’m not sure why they were there or what the point of adding them were and I was kind of hoping it wouldn’t end the pretty unrealistic way that it did but.. 🤷🏼‍♀️
It wasn’t my most favorite AJ book

I don’t know how to feel. did I cry? yes. did I like it? I guess. did I hate it. absolutely.

I was mostly enjoying the first 3/4 (despite thinking the FMC was annoying) but the last quarter ruined it for me.
Brandon dying pissed me off. I think just as much could have been accomplished by him being hurt and surging too. the whole getting together and pining after each other while dealing with the death seems tacky to me, maybe it happens in real life too, but I hated it. I cried for Sloane, I was more invested in their relationship which DIED than the characters it was supposed to be about. idk if I want to read Sloane find her person in the next book.

I’ve loved other books by this author, but had a hard time with the immaturity of the characters in the beginning. I was also incredibly frustrated by Kristin’s absolute unwillingness to talk to Jacob about her concerns. The twist was incredibly graphic and while I did appreciate how well several difficult subjects were handled I just found myself too often wanting to send all the characters to therapy. It was fine. I’m not upset I read it. But it just wasn’t a hit for me.

It’s funny having read these books out of order and knowing where Kristen and Josh ended up. Even with that knowledge, this book was adorable and heartfelt and sad in the way Abby Jimenez always crafts her stories.
