First read: April 2015

Second read (not including previous audiobook): July 2020

Christine's sister - what a bitch! Loved the introduction to Kander and the beginnings of his and Christine's relationship. Loved seeing Whyborne further developing his talents too.

When I think of Whyborne and his fez, all I can see is this:

This was, once again, a fantastic ride! This time, Hawk takes us all the way to Egypt, where we find ghuls and a demon and long lost sister
Spoilergone evil
, mummies an ancient Egyptian queen, and magic, and thrills and chills! But through it all, we have Percival and Griffin, who just shine so bright, no matter what is happening around them. I think these two are fast becoming my favorite couple, and I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Pertaining specifically to this latest entry, I admit my eyes glassed over quite a bit with complicated Egyptian names, terms, legend, and lore. I couldn’t keep anything very straight in my poor brain, except that some long dead evil sorceress is resurrected and is trying to find her equally evil dead husband’s source of power, and of course, Whyborne, Griffin and good ole Christine, must save the day by any means possible.

What I will always appreciate about this series is its consistency. You’re gonna get a paranormal mystery that puts our protagonists in quite a pickle that will test their mettle over and over again. It will also consistently bring the subtle and not so subtle humor around Whyborne’s fussiness and Griffin’s confident cheekiness, while still show the real vulnerabilities and fears these two men have. Through it all, each time, they as a team only grow stronger.

Overall, good storytelling (minus the complicated and convoluted Egyptian hullabaloo) with just the right amount of action, heart, and smexy.

Heavy "The Mummy" vibes, right down to
leads who are randomly descended from ancient Egyptian tribesmen and full of esoteric knowledge, which... I wasn't expecting a lot so it wasn't actually offensive, but at the same time having the only brown person in the cast be a descendant of an ancient mystical tribe of nomads devoted to protecting the world is kind of a look?
Fun and light. I'm enjoying this series and it's a good distraction right now but I'm not going to need to revisit it later; it doesn't have the heft of Freya Marske or someone.

I’m loving this series. I just heard of it a few months ago. I am not usually into horror, but the gay parts make up for the gory parts.

I wanted to love this so much and I did but it is true that the first 7 chapters were a bit of a challenge. Mainly because I've finished reading the first three books and could not continue with the story (I got a bit tired of the characters, I guess). I read the 7 chapters. Waiter 4 months and then finished it within a day!

As always, the romance is a bit at the background (though the love Whyborne and Griffin have is always tangible) but the mystery was really intriguing.

I loved also the tiny twists - even though they were a little predictable (at least the one about the villain).

I am still highly invested in the series and cannot wait to continue it!
